"It would also mean the air force could reduce to 42 the number of aircraft taking part in the full $1.5 billion Hornet upgrade program."

"Dr Nelson decided to opt for the Super Hornet without a detailed study of alternative aircraft types such as the US air force's F-15 Eagle or the European Typhoon. The Super Hornet offers some commonalities with the Australian air force's existing Hornet fleet and a relatively easy conversion for air crew, air force sources say."

    http://www.militarypeople.com.au/mainsite/content/view/140/1/

"The Super Hornet purchase will also enable the RAAF to retire its fleet of 40 year old fleet of F-111 aircraft before 2012."

"The Super Hornets are due to be delivered as early as 2008."

On est pas beaucoup plus fixé. :(
2 ailes, 2 moteurs … mais comme le dit Gillouf, un SNA et une motorisation complètement différents.

Comme le dit l'article, il y a certains avantages pour la RAAF :
"In comparison with Australia's existing 20 year-old F/A-18 Hornets, the wing, center and aft fuselage, tail surfaces and powerplants of the Super Hornet are entirely new.

The Super Hornet has a 25% larger wing that allows the aircraft to return to base with a larger load of unspent munitions.

It has a maximum speed of Mach 1.8 at high altitude and an effective range of 1100 km with a service ceiling of 50,000 feet.

The fuselage was stretched to carry more fuel and room for future avionics upgrades. An engine with 35% more power, the General Electric F414, was developed to power this larger, heavier aircraft.

The aircraft can carry five 440 US gallon (1,700 liter) external fuel tanks for long-distance ferry flights or four tanks plus an Aerial Refueling Store (ARS), or "buddy store", which allows the Super Hornet to refuel other aircraft.
Other differences include angular intakes for the engines, a smaller radar cross section (RCS), two extra wing hardpoints for payload, and other aerodynamic changes."

J'ai cru que les australiens envisagaient d'acheter des Rafales ou des Typhoon pour faire comme les japonais ou les coréens.

  • Raytheon announced in California Monday that the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) would acquire 66 of the company's ALR-67(V)3 systems, which have been proven in carrier operations over Iraq. "This program will provide the RAAF F/A-18 fleet the most advanced, effective radar warning receiver available," said Raytheon Program Director Kathy Weiler. The ALR-67 is already fully integrated to the Hornet's avionics and provides digital detection of enemy anti-aircraft radar signals, allowing the crew to take evasive action and launch a counter-attack if needed. Raytheon said the latest model includes an improved digital measurement path and channelized receiver architecture that allows the device to pick up faint radar signals amid electronic clutter and interference…

  • Australia to join Boeing P-8 MMA progamme

Australia is to negotiate to join the US Navy's Boeing P-8A Multi-mission Martime Aircraft development programme, after the government gave first-pass approval for the A$4 billion ($3.5 billion) AIR 7000 Phase 2 programme to replace the Royal Australian Air Force's AP-3C Orions.

The 737-based P-8A Poseidon will meet the Royal Australian Air Force's manned Maritime Patrol and Response Aircraft (MPRA) requirement and operate alongside the Multi-mission Unmanned Aerial System (MUAS). Australia has joined the US Navy's Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS) programme to meet the MUAS requirement, otherwsie known as AIR 7000 Phase 1.

Together the manned MPRA and unmanned MUAS will replace the AP-3Cs, which are planned to be retired in 2018 after more than 30 years of service.
