  • Air Force marks 95th anniversary

The Serbian Army (VS) Air Force marked the 95th anniversary this Monday with a ceremony at its Batajnica base. The idea to introduce an air force in the Serbian army is first mentioned in a document entitled, Decree on Formation of the Army, dated August 2, 1893. The decree envisaged "establishment of a hot air balloon unit" in each division of the Army of the Kingdom of Serbia. Some twenty years later, in 1912, a group of the Kingdom officers was sent to France to attend a pilot training course. While the pilots were trained, airplanes were bought, and on the order of Defense Minister Radomir Putnik, an Air Force command was formed on December 24, 1912, in the southern town of Niš. Thus Serbia became one of only 15 countries in the world that had a military aviation at the time. The Air Force has suffered in the past decades along with the rest of the Army, with officers' training, equipment and status steadily eroding. But the Defense Ministry has plans to revitalize the country's aging warplane fleet and has in the past year provided the pilots with basic conditions for training, almost completely lacking since 1999.

  • The first upgraded MiG 29 aircraft will soon enter service of the Serbian Air Force. All modification works and restoration airworthy condition is done by Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG. The contract implies modernization of four combat aircrafts and an operation trainer. The aircrafts will be equipped with new avionic equipment, navigation instruments and radar facilities. Five Serbian MiG 29 aircrafts used to be on Air Force service of Yugoslavia, which numbered over 30 aircrafts of that kind then. However, in the course of NATO bombing campaign in the Balkans the majority of the aircrafts were destroyed in the air or air facility bases.

  • The Serbian air force intends to modernise up to 15 Soko G-4 Super Galeb trainers, and is making plans for the purchase of a new multirole helicopter type. The "G4-MD" upgrade is aimed at extending the trainers' service life until 2030, says air force commander-in-chief Gen Dragan Katanic. The trainers, which can be used for training and light-attack missions, will be fitted with new avionics systems, multifunctional flight displays, head-up displays, hands-on throttle sticks, integrated mission computers, distance measuring equipment, GPS-based navigation systems, identification friend or foe, navcomm units, mission records, and VHF omni-range and instrument landing systems. Integration of guided weapons, countermeasures and targeting systems is also scheduled as part of the upgrade, which will cost euros 4-5 million ($6.2-7.8 million) per trainer. Dragan Sutanovac, Serbia's minister of defence, has meanwhile revealed that his ministry is conducting an analysis of helicopter needs with a view to purchasing a new multirole type. The air force intends to launch a selection process in 2011 and complete it by 2014, says Katanic, who has previously said that "one to two" Mil Mi-17 helicopters will be purchased in 2009. To bridge gaps in helicopter pilot training, the air force has been bringing out of retirement its Mikoyan MiG-20s. All five are due back in service by the end of the year. Air force officials claim that over the past three years flight hours have sextupled and aircraft serviceability has doubled.

    Serbia eyes surplus Bosnian fighters
    By Igor Salinger

The Serbian air force is negotiating the acquisition of eight surplus fighters from Bosnia.

The aircraft - seven J-22 Oraos and a G-4 Super Galeb of former Yugoslav origin and part of a lot given by the rump Yugoslavia to Bosnian Serb armed forces in 1992 - have not yet been officially proclaimed surplus, but have not flown several years and are likely to be withdrawn from use.

Bosnian defence minister Selmo Cikotic says: "Effectively, we can only sell them to Serbia - either that or the scrapyard." Following the fusion of Serbian and Bosnian-Croat armed forces, the Bosnian defence ministry appears unlikely to keep fixed-wing combat aircraft in its inventory, relying instead on Mil Mi-8/17, Gazelle and UH-1 helicopters.

  • Serbia's Lasta-95 trainer makes first flight

The first prototype of Serbia's delayed Utva Lasta-95/Lasta 3 piston trainer made its first two flights from Batajnica air base on 5 February, flown respectively by test pilot Lt Col Salko Hadži? and Maj Saša Gruba. Serbia intends to acquire 15 of the aircraft to replace Utva-75s used for pilot training by its 252nd Mixed Aviation Squadron.

Iraq also in December 2007 ordered 20 armed examples from Serbian arms export company Yugoimport-SDPR, and placed options on a further 15. A second prototype with two underwing hardpoints designed to carry bombs weighing up to 100kg (220lb), rocket pods and pod-housed 12.7mm machine guns is scheduled to join the flight-test campaign in the near future.
