  • UK RAF prepares package of cuts

The UK Royal Air Force's (RAF's) Air Command is considering disbanding frontline Tornado GR.4 squadrons and closing training and helicopter bases because of budget shortfalls in the July 2007 Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR).
UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) officials close to the CSR process have told Jane's that the proposed force structure cuts also include keeping the RAF's veteran Tornado F.3 air-defence aircraft in service until 2015 because of delays in bringing the Eurofighter Typhoon into service at RAF Leuchars in Scotland.[…] RAF officers say the need to divert resources to elements of the RAF that are heavily committed to operations in Iraq and Afghanistan - such as the air transport, support helicopter, force protection and Harrier GR.7/9 forces - is one of the main drivers behind this process.
