  • The Czech Defence Ministry today received the government's consent with the purchase of ammunition for the guns of Jas-39 Gripen fighters from Germany, cabinet spokeswoman Jana Bartosova told CTK. The government also gave a go-ahead to the five-year extension of an agreement with the USA on the logistics support to the air-to-air missiles used by Gripens and the subsonic Czech-made L-159 combat planes, Bartosova said. According to NATO plans, still unconfirmed by the Czech parliament, four Czech fighters are to protect air space above Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania for several months next year. The Czech Republic received 100 pieces of live ammunition of the air-to-air AIM-9M Sidewinders type, 18 training missiles, the launching equipment and spare parts from the USA in 2002. The contract on the missiles included an agreement on a five-year logistics support under which the Czech personnel has been trained. The agreement expires at the end of this year. Last year, Americans proposed that it be extended. The proposal counts with the Czech Republic drawing of support set aside by the U.S. administration worth 2 to 2.5 million dollars. The original contract for the deliveries of the 27mm ammunition for the aircraft gun Mauser BK-27 of the Gripens was concluded by the Czech and German defence ministries in 2005. Out of the four addressed countries, Germany was the only to respond to the offer. The Czech military leased 14 Gripens from Sweden in 2005.

  • La république tchèque va commander 4 appareils de transport C-295M à EADS.

Czechs Order Transport Planes From EADS

The Czech government April 20 approved the purchase of four Casa C-295M military transport planes from the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS), the CTK news agency said.

The defense ministry has earmarked about 3.5 billion koruna (130 million euros, $168 million) for the aircraft, due to be delivered in 2009-2011.

The planes will replace four outdated Soviet-made Antonov An-26 aircraft.

  • Czechs for NAPMO
The Czech Government has agreed to join NATO’s Airborne Early Warning and Control Programme Management Organisation (NAPMO).

December 15: Czech newspaper CeskeNoviny.com reports that the Czech Government has agreed to join NATO’s Airborne Early Warning and Control Programme Management Organisation (NAPMO) from January 1.

The Czech Defence Ministry’s contribution to NAPMO will be almost €290,000 a year. The ministry says the accession to the system will improve and enhance the Czech Republic's defence capability along with its position in NATO; it is not clear yet if Czech personnel will join NAPMO.

At present NAPMO, which was formed in 1978, has 17 members, 16 of whom share the operation of 17 Boeing E-3A airborne warning and control (AWACS) aircraft based at Geilenkirchen in Germany. The 16 countries are Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey and the USA. The 17th is Britain, which operates seven E-3Ds from RAF Waddington.
