RC-12 Guardrail upgrade progresses
The US Army has completed initial testing on the first RC-12X Guardrail aircraft.
January 5: The US Army has completed electromagnetic interference and electromagnetic compatibility testing on the first RC-12X Guardrail aircraft, bringing it closer to achieving operational capability.
Based on the C-12 Huron, the military version of the Beechcraft King Air 200, the RC-12 Guardrail is the US Army’s primary Signal Intelligence (SIGINT) airborne system. The US Army operates 48 RC-12s in six different versions; the RC-12N Guardrail I, RC-12P Guardrail II, RC-12H Guardrail III, RC-12K Guardrail IV, RC-12D Guardrail V and RC-12Q Guardrail Common Sensor, equipping six units plus a training squadron in the USA.
Northrop Grumman is overseeing the $462 million RC-12X Guardrail modernisation programme that introduces significant hardware and software improvements and will provide a common standard for the fleet. It is scheduled for initial release in 2010, extending the useful life of the RC-12 to at least 2020.
