Le F-35 a été choisi au lieu des F/A-18 et les Typhoon qui ont aussi été considéré dans le programme F-X tender. Les 42 Lightning II remplaceront la flotte de 117 F-4 Phantom en service depuis 1968 dans la Japan Air Self-Defense Force. Il était l'appareil le plus cher des trois avec un prix unitaire estimé à 113 millions de dollars.[/quote]
