January 6: Boeing and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Air Force and Air Defence finally confirmed the long-anticipated order for the C-17 Globemaster III airlifter, but in a surprise move six aircraft have been acquired, rather than the expected four.

Following up the announcement made on February 25, 2009 that the UAE intended to modernise its airlift capabilities with the C-17, the country is the second Middle East nation to order the aircraft.

"The C-17 will give the UAE the ability to perform a variety of humanitarian and strategic lift operations around the world in support of both national and international missions," said Major General Staff Pilot Faris Mohamed Al Mazrouei. "These missions require us to be ready for any contingency at any time and any place."

Boeing will provide support for the UAE C-17s and will deliver four aircraft in 2011 and two in 2012.[/quote][/quote]
