The Williamtown-based jet fighter-bomber took off from the base about midday and experienced trouble shortly after, returning at 12.15pm with smoke coming from the body of the plane. It followed standard emergency landing procedure, with an aircraft arrestor cable to stop the jet on the runway. Fire and rescue teams met the aircraft on landing, and fire crews used foam to reduce the risk of fire from a fuel leak. The runway was closed to both military and civilian aircraft for 30 minutes while the Hornet was removed. A Defence Department spokesman said an investigation into the cause of the incident was under way. Commercial aircraft departing from, and arriving at, Newcastle Airport were affected, with some departures delayed and aircraft in the air asked to hold their positions. An airport spokeswoman said all services were back on time by 12.45pm. "There was minimal impact on civilian operations," she said. It was the second Williamtown RAAF base aircraft to perform an emergency landing in as many months. A Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer landed at Coffs Harbour Airport with a damaged wing on August 13. The Defence Department is also looking into why an instrument pod detached from a Hornet on August 29, falling into dense bush near Merriwa. http://www.theherald.com.au/news/local/news/general/raaf-hornet-in-forced-landing/1284021.aspx
