Litening III now in RAF service, says UK chief of air staff 

Panavia Tornado GR.4 strike aircraft of the UK Royal Air Force (RAF) equipped with the Rafael Litening III targeting pod have been operating over Iraq since mid-February, according to the UK's chief of the air staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Glenn Torpy. The pod was integrated on to the Tornado GR.4 strike aircraft by QinetiQ. Work began on the programme in September 2006. The Litening III pod replaces the UK-developed TIALD 500 (Thermal Imaging And Laser Designation 500-series) pod, the infrared sensor of which is unable to provide sufficient resolution to identify encountered targets or downlink imagery to a ROVER (Remote Operated Video Enhanced Receiver) ground station while in flight.
